Gurap Nandadulal Temple

When you think of intricate terracotta work on temples in Bengal, it's always Bishnupur which comes to mind. But a slight turn of roads will lead you to a hidden gem of a village which has similar artworks.

A two to three hour drive from Kolkata will take you to Gurap in the Hooghly district, an ideal destination for a day trip on a weekend. The Nandadulal Temple of Gurap in Hooghly district of West Bengal is a state protected monument. Built in 1751 by Ramdeb Nag is an east-facing aatchala temple with intricate terracotta decorations.

Gurap Pancharatna Temples

These temples are a short distance away from the Nandadulal Temple, built sometime in the 19th century. The “pancharatna”, meaning five-jewelled style of Bengal’s temple architecture, consists of a superstructure with a large central tower and four smaller towers at the corners.

These twin Shiva temples did contain terracotta decorations at one point, but today, most of it has decayed. The temples, however, are still in use, and apart from the loss of the decorative tiles, are in good shape.
